increasing your courage in the workplace

Hello beautiful human

Courage is a virtue.

A virtue (Latin: virtus) is a trait of excellence, including traits that may be moral, social, or intellectual.

It’s a virtue because it needs to be practiced, it doesn’t just happen. It’s a daily commitment.

People, Talent and Culture people are often heart-led. How many of you reading this would agree?

Our big hearts mean that we see so much of what happens in organisations and so much more of what is wrong. The challenge is that many of us silence these voices of protest within us, and try to walk the line of selective challenge and acceptance.

We marginalise our intuition to fit in, sometimes so we can’t even hear the voice at all. It takes an awakened heart to tap into wisdom of your intuition and to trust it.

I think part of the the challenge is that we blame ourselves for what happens within organisations, when there is so much that sits outside of our control.

Instead, I want to offer a reframe.

Perhaps instead, we can learn to see every moment as divine. Companies and humans have so much to learn, but it takes the perfect storm for us to be able to have the right conditions to grow.

The things that are going wrong within your company right now, are not down to you. And real talk...? You may or may not have the power to make things better. But what you can always do is bring your heart.

You are so worthy of your role.

You are so important to this earth.

Your heart matters.

Your voice matters.

By practicing the virtue of courage, you can fortify your ability to step outside of your comfort zone. And fortify your ability to stand up for what’s right.

I want to help you learn how to start practicing this virtue. Here are three things that I can offer you right now to get you started:

1. Learn new methods for building courage.

Different things help different people, and I've spent years trying many of them. I share the Bloom method in detail this free masterclass: how I found my voice, how I built courage and how I learnt to ask for more. This is the first time I have shared this in so much detail.

2. Speak up and share your ideas.

It takes courage to speak up, especially when it involves sharing innovative ideas, raising concerns, or contributing to discussions. I understand how scary it is to speak up. Start in lower stakes situations and remember, the world needs your heart. By leaning in to learning how to express yourself confidently, you can create a more diverse and inclusive work environment.

3. Say yes to leadership opportunities.

Stepping into leadership is a true act of courage, as it often involves taking on more responsibilities, making tough decisions, and potentially facing criticism. By embracing leadership positions, you not only demonstrate courage and build trust in yourself, but also inspire other women in the workplace. Leadership roles provide a platform to influence positive change and contribute to a more equitable workplace.

4. Advocate for yourself and others.

Real talk, advocating for others is a great way to build your skills for speaking up. Then you can learn how to be assertive about your accomplishments, skills, and career goals. Annnnnnnd then negotiate for fair compensation and recognition. Being an advocate for yourself and others fosters a culture of courage and empowerment within the workplace.

Biggest of all, remember that practicing the virtue of courage doesn't always mean taking big, bold actions; it can also involve small, consistent acts of bravery.

Each of these practices contributes to creating a workplace environment where women feel empowered, valued, and supported in their careers and lives.

Together we can do this.
